A new set of patents have surfaced on NeoGAF suggesting that Nintendo is working on a VR headset that will be compatible with the Nintendo Switch. The patent appears to show a head-mounted display unit that functions similarly to Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR, with the Switch being dropped into the headset to use as a screen. The headset features lenses that will create a 3D effect using the Switch hardware.
Alongside the patent is a description for detachable Joycon controllers that can be used with the headset, although the information listed doesn’t seem to describe motion controls.
While the patents were first published today, they were filed back on June 10th which means Nintendo has had plenty of time to get the design of this accessory finalized if it’s going to be released. As always, a patent reveal doesn’t mean a device is certainly coming, but it is nice to see what Nintendo has been working on this year.
What do you think? Should Nintendo develop a VR headset that’s compatible with the Switch?
